Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm FAQ
As a landlord or managing agent, what am I required to do?
As announced recently by Housing Minister Brandon Lewis, from October 2015 Landlords will be required by law to ensure working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed in rental properties in England.
How many alarms must I have?
Smoke alarms must be installed on each storey of the building on which there is a room used wholly or partly as living accommodation. Also a carbon monoxide detector should be installed in any room of the premises which is used wholly or partly as living accommodation and contains a solid fuel burning combustion appliance
How will I receive my alarm(s)?
At ESS we can provide the required alarms as best suits you. They can be delivered to any UK address marked for the attention of the landlord, tenant or managing agents – just let us know what you would prefer!
What happens if I don’t adhere to the legislation regarding smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?
Most importantly failure to provide appropriate alamrs means you are potentially endangering your tenants. Failing to comply with the legislation effective from 10th of October 2015 will leave you open to a penalty of up to £5000.
